Soldiers in WWII would eat hot meals and fresh food were very rare. Camp kitchens relied mostly on canned food or other non perishable treasures like flour and beans. Men in foxholes or tanks ate food directly out of ration cans unless they had the valued opportunity to warm their food via open fire or running engine. Large navy vessels had refrigeration so they had a greater variety of food for sailors than of smaller ships like who had only canned rations. The Navy was lucky because they had a mess that served breakfast, lunch and dinner.
